Selling Yourself

Are you weird about 'selling yourself'? You will get the result at the end of this blog.

After reading the word "sales," you probably think of the marketing and sales team. Of course, it's not random, it's trademarked when you say the word "sales" (okay, I agree. Some of you even have other thoughts). Sales is not a skill you can earn out of college. It is inherent in each of us. In everyday life, you sell yourself knowingly or unknowingly.

First let me tell you what is selling, selling is when you want to give something to others at for or no cost. Eg, you have a mobile phone which is three years older than the market and you need to upgrade to the latest one. What do you do? You are trying to sell your old phone for a new one. You can go to a local second-hand market and sell your old phone for a better price or exchange it for a new one at a mobile phone shop. What are you trying to do here?

Selling your mobile phone at the best price in the secondhand market – For example, you bought your mobile phone three years ago for 10K and the new one you are looking for is now 15K. You have 10K in hand and 5K deficit. You plan to sell your phone for 7K but need only 5K to buy a new one. The actual price of your phone is only 4K at the old market value. Now you have two options: either you have to negotiate and get your shortfall or sell at the price they offered. Here comes the "sale". How do you sell your product to your advantage without losing the buyer's profit?

Well, how does this apply to selling yourself, I hear you say. Yes, I am now going to tell you what it means to sell yourself. The best example I can give you is a job interview. What do you do when you go for an interview? “What a stupid question, I go to a job interview, answer all the questions they ask me, get the job offer and start my position very happy”. Yes, I do agree with you. But what you think is actually not happening, what is happening here is “Selling yourself”. Yeah, you sell yourself in an interview to get hired by them.

You explain your past experiences and skills, how your previous company benefited from you and your work, and how you benefit this company with your skills and experience, how you add value to their business, etc. (we'll get to the job interview, later in some other blog post). This is what you do. This is not the end, in your career journey you try to sell yourself in various situations, performance appraisal, best employee award, promotion, onsite position and so on.

Now, I hope you understand why I said that selling yourself is not a marketing and sales job, it is not new or inexperienced for all of us. We sometimes do this without money.

Conclusion: To sell yourself, you need to improve yourself in various aspects. Updating yourself is nothing but continuous learning.

Stay tuned for my next scribbling!!

Humble thanks to you all from a scribbler 😊
